About the Show
Christian V. Davila’s intricately created “Paper Feathers: Art, Tech, and Nature” takes us to a feathered paradise.
With an obvious passion for birds and a knowledge of different bird species Davila doesn’t just replicate birds, she sculpts, cuts, and shapes every inch of every feather until they mirror nature’s magnificence, helping us to remember its fragility.
Davila’s birds are meticulously made with an inventive combination of mixed media, cut repurposed book paper, clay, and 3D technology.
On the one hand, Davila’s birds have realistic qualities of graceful lightness, and beautiful variations of color, pattern, and form. One can imagine their warble and song, the sight of their delicate wings flapping or soaring. On the other hand, Davila also manages to give each bird a unique twist, that of a personality.
While viewing “Paper Feathers: Art, Tech, and Nature” you just might envision these beautiful birds doing something quirky that makes you laugh or gasp as they suddenly take flight - a bit of magic resides in these remarkable and delicately layered birds.
Artist Statement
I am a Mexican-American artist based in Chico, CA. Inspired by nature—especially birds and driven by a passion for Digital Fabrication Technology. My work explores the harmony between the organic and the mechanical, blending natural beauty with modern innovation.
My journey began in 2012, crafting bird sculptures from clay and hand-cut book paper for texture and detail. Over time, my process evolved to include 3D modeling, 3D printing, and laser cutting, which have streamlined production while opening new creative possibilities.
Despite these technological advances, my art remains deeply personal. Each piece incorporates handcrafted techniques, ensuring every sculpture is unique. Even when revisiting past works, no two pieces are ever identical—a reflection of the individuality and wonder I strive to celebrate in my art.
For my exhibit at the Nevada City Winery Gallery, I am creating pieces inspired by birds native to Nevada County and Northern California. I find joy in celebrating the birds around me-pausing to admire their beauty in nature. While my sculptures attempt to recreate them, I focus on capturing their essence. Through intricate details and the way, I cut and layer paper, I highlight features that might otherwise go unnoticed, offering viewers a deeper appreciation for these creatures. Most of the pieces in this show are brand new, designed specifically for this exhibit to bring my vision to life.
