About the Show

Alice Krasinski’s “Shifting Light, Shifting Seasons: Paintings From The Backyard and Beyond” gives us an acute sense of a momentary experience when a glimpse of stunning beauty changes before our eyes. To capture a split second is miraculous, Krasinski grasps and holds the transition, giving it light and life.

Nature is the primary subject of this exhibit yet there are very faint suggestions of human presence; that presence is just on the edges of Nature’s still quietude. Off in the distance is a tiny twinkle of lights, as the sky and water merge from blues of day to after-sunset cloudy grays. This gives the viewer not only perspective, but Krasinski conveys a feeling of “what’s going on over there?” with that glow of faraway ‘lit lights’- reflecting on a waterscape.

Krasinski's ability to use both delicate and broad layered brush strokes allows her to express subtle or sweeping transitions between sunset to twilight. From autumn light filtering through bright golden-orange leaves, to an intense yellow wrapping the bark of trees, or an iridescent chartreuse greening of spring leaves and grasses

Krasinski even explores close-up views of underwater boulders with shimmering changing light.

“Shifting Light, Shifting Seasons: Paintings From The Backyard and Beyond”, reveals a remembrance of nature’s repeated, yet ever-changing cycles of transition.

Artist Statement

Artist Alice Krasinski talks about her show “Shifting Light, Shifting Seasons: Paintings From The Backyard and Beyond” at the Nevada City Winery Gallery.

I am drawn to painting for some of the same reasons I am drawn to spending time in nature, a sense of wonder that soothes and invigorates me. Like a hike on a mountain trail or a wander on a beach, every painting is an exploration. Though I have a starting point with each canvas, I never know what I will discover in the process or where I will end up.

What motivates me to paint is something intangible about the mystery of light, discovering moments that catch my breath. Wanting somehow to channel those feelings, painting places and moments that moved me. I’m as curious watching the seasonal changes in my backyard forest as I am exploring new terrain. The artworks in “Shifting Light, Shifting Seasons: Paintings from the Backyard and Beyond” reflect a few of those magical moments.

About the Artist

Alice Krasinski is a visual artist who divides her time between outdoor activities and painting in her studio in the Sierra foothills. With a BFA in ceramics from the Rhode Island School of Design, she moved to California in the late seventies and pursued careers in theatrical design/production first, then museum exhibition management. In 2018, after wrapping up more than two decades at the Exploratorium, she relocated to Nevada County and started to explore painting.

Her artwork focuses primarily on the natural world, most often inspired by the ways in which light interacts with the environments and objects in her life. Her paintings strive to capture the energy of these fleeting moments of joy.

Her paintings have been seen in the Wild and Scenic Film Festival Art Exhibition, Sacramento Fine Arts, Arts Benicia, Blue Line Gallery, and Nevada County West Open Studios exhibitions and Art Tours. Her work is in private collections in both northern and southern California.
