Artist Statement
Artist Richard Swayze talks about his Show “Pictures of An Expedition 1972–2023” at the Nevada City Winery Gallery.
I paint in a small rustic studio with an easel gifted to me by the artist Richard Hough, often while sitting on an office chair salvaged from a commercial remodel. I paint what is in front of me and what I think I understand, and places I’ve been and places I want to travel to. I use photos and real objects and memories for references. Lately I’ve been listening to the music of Iris DeMent and Mussorgsky while working.
This exhibit, “Pictures of An Expedition 1972–2023,” consists of pencil drawings, watercolors, and oils that record a fictional expedition that explored mountain ranges and urban environments around the world from the 1970’s to the present.
