About the Show

Jennifer Rain Crosby’s “River Daughter” brings the wonder and allure of seeing deeply. The glittering of light on water, the intricate lacework of moss on rocks, and her enchanted story-like forests with embedded mirrors, all remind us of the dual meaning of ‘reflection’.

Jennifer Rain Crosby dives into her brush strokes, both gentle and bold. They are full to the brim with life.

In her river series, she paints with a keen awareness of changing light, not only autumn into winter, but also how it captures our attention and can shift our moods. It is obvious this ‘daughter’ learns from and has long loved the river, her surrounding banks, and her strong spirit.

Jennifer Rain Crosby’s series of mirror paintings literally takes the viewer into the work – offering the chance to literally see oneself or walk through a gateway of your choosing.

Artist Statement

Jennifer Rain Crosby talks about her show, “River Daughter” at the Nevada City Winery Gallery.

For this exhibit, I am weaving together two different threads of my artwork, river paintings, and mixed media mirror paintings. I am equally inspired by the local landscape and a mystical inner landscape. Reflections. As within, so without.

We are all familiar with summer Yuba River paintings. Her languid emerald currents studded with tourmaline submerged rocks, shapely white granite boulders on her banks. But do you know her other seasons?

In late summer and early autumn, before the rains come, her low water levels make glassy reflections of the dry banks, oak golds, conifer greens, and sky-blue boulders.

In winter, her waters first darken in sinuous serpentine as they rise and then lighten into frothy ochre chai as the currents grow mightier with each passing storm.

In early spring, burgundy and purple branches lace the banks of her milky jade dancing body. They are the heralds of every shade of green to come in leaf, moss, and blade. As spring matures, greens give way to sweeps of wildflowers, butterflies and birds and the Yuba demures to teal greens.

Mirrors of Past, Present and Future

In 2020 I began a multimedia series incorporating mirrors, gold and silver leaf, decoupage, and handcrafted oil paint. My aim was to include the viewer in each artwork. If we can enter a piece of art, who are we? What are we capable of? Now more than ever we must cultivate the powers of possibility and be the change we want to see in the world.
